![]() As of 20, Apple reverted to Arabic numeral versioning for successive releases, macOS 11 Big Sur and macOS 12 Monterey, as they have done for the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 following the iPhone X. Previous Macintosh operating systems (versions of the classic Mac OS) were named using Arabic numerals, as with Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9. ![]() However, it is also commonly pronounced like the letter "X". The letter "X" in Mac OS X's name refers to the number 10, a Roman numeral, and Apple has stated that it should be pronounced "ten" in this context. Mac OS X was originally presented as the tenth major version of Apple's operating system for Macintosh computers until 2020, versions of macOS retained the major version number "10". The project was first code named " Rhapsody" and then officially named Mac OS X. This purchase also led to Steve Jobs returning to Apple as an interim, and then the permanent CEO, shepherding the transformation of the programmer-friendly OPENSTEP into a system that would be adopted by Apple's primary market of home users and creative professionals. This led Apple to purchase NeXT in 1996, allowing NeXTSTEP, then called OPENSTEP, to serve as the basis for Apple's next generation operating system. Throughout the early 1990s, Apple had tried to create a "next-generation" OS to succeed its classic Mac OS through the Taligent, Copland and Gershwin projects, but all were eventually abandoned. Its graphical user interface was built on top of an object-oriented GUI toolkit using the Objective-C programming language. The kernel of NeXTSTEP is based upon the Mach kernel, which was originally developed at Carnegie Mellon University, with additional kernel layers and low-level user space code derived from parts of BSD. There, the Unix-like NeXTSTEP operating system was developed, before being launched in 1989. The heritage of what would become macOS had originated at NeXT, a company founded by Steve Jobs following his departure from Apple in 1985. MacOS has supported three major processor architectures, beginning with PowerPC-based Macs in 1999. After sixteen distinct versions of macOS 10, macOS Big Sur was presented as version 11 in 2020, and every subsequent version has also incremented the major version number. Apple shortened the name to "OS X" in 2011 and then changed it to "macOS" in 2016 to align with the branding of Apple's other operating systems, iOS, watchOS, and tvOS. Apple's other operating systems ( iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, audioOS) are derivatives of macOS.Ī prominent part of macOS's original brand identity was the use of Roman numeral X, pronounced "ten" as in Mac OS X and also the iPhone X, as well as code naming each release after species of big cats, or places within California. All releases from Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and after are UNIX 03 certified, with an exception for OS X 10.7 Lion. The first desktop version, Mac OS X 10.0, was released in March 2001, with its first update, 10.1, arriving later that year. During this time, Apple cofounder Steve Jobs had left Apple and started another company, NeXT, developing the NeXTSTEP platform that would later be acquired by Apple to form the basis of macOS. MacOS succeeded the classic Mac OS, a Mac operating system with nine releases from 1984 to 1999. With Bella-Kotchap grounded with a hamstring problem, Jan Bednarek did brilliantly to prevent Johnson locating an unmarked Awoniyi. Nothing epitomised the absorbing nature of this game more than Brennan Johnson burning past Armel Bella-Kotchap after 10 minutes, leaving the Southampton centre-back floundering like Scrappy-Doo and then on all fours. “I just spoke to one or two players that I know and they said: ‘What an atmosphere’,” Cooper said afterwards. There is something special about games under the lights here at the best of times and filthy conditions only enhanced an entertaining, if sometimes slapstick, encounter. Any hope generated from Leicester’s pummelling at Fulham quickly evaporated by the time Everton coasted to a surprise victory at Brighton. Perhaps it was no surprise that this game was played at a breathless pace given both teams’ pressing need for points. “They wanted to come back, they wanted to play. “I think the boys showed character,” Rubén Sellés, the Southampton manager, said. It was all a stark contrast to Gibbs-White embracing pitch security staff as Forest completed their victory lap to the thud of Just Can’t Get Enough. James Ward-Prowse, a little withdrawn and extremely deflated, looked deep into the stand. Southampton’s players, sullen-faced, gathered, largely hands on hips in front of the travelling fans. Mathematically, Southampton can survive but it will take a miracle from here. With three games to play – trips to Chelsea and Crystal Palace, on the final day, bookend a date at home to Arsenal – Forest’s heads are above water. This was not a night that was good for the blood pressure but by the end Forest, courtesy of a Taiwo Awoniyi double, Morgan Gibbs-White’s penalty and a decisive strike by Danilo, had wrapped up a brilliant win over the bottom club Southampton and a precious three points, breathing life into their bid for Premier League survival. Not only did Canada’s Wonderland roll out a staggering 34 of these virtual rides, but it focused on personalising the ambience for the public. It began offering a range of virtual rollercoasters and rides from first-person view, available for free on its website, which was met with enthusiasm (and presumably some relief) by parents with restless children even beyond Canada. ![]() Canada’s Wonderland was quick to get aboard the virtual tourism train when closures began to take place in Toronto. How Canada’s Wonderland is exploring virtual tourismĪ good example is Canada’s Wonderland, one of the best theme parks in Canada. This includes experimenting with virtual tourism, and the latest news in the world of virtual travel indicates that there are varied and budget-friendly ways to offer it. With competition in the tourism industry all the more acute due to the pandemic, venues are experimenting with form and style. Gone are the days when the only ways to advertise your business were confined to newspaper pages and television ad-breaks. NASA’s been using virtual reality and augmented reality for decades with its space simulators, sparking a fascination with the stars in the young (and young-at-heart). All of this technology has helped to prepare the tourism industry for its greatest challenge yet: connecting with visitors without having them in the same room. Amusement parks and 3D cinemas have used 3D goggles and effects, like vibrating seats or splashes of water, to transport visitors into other worlds. Museums have developed fit-for-purpose virtual experiences that can whisk visitors into new spaces through immersive exhibits. How museums and attractions are exploring virtual tourism Photo by Patrick Schneider on Unsplashįor years now, elements of virtual tourism have been used as part of in-person visits to attractions to allow visitors to experience more than what is right in front of them. But virtual tourism also offers a host of less ambitious, but impressive opportunities, in the here and now. Of course, this is a bold vision – one that requires an environment that right now is far beyond the reach of the average museum and the average virtual tourist. It’s pure transportation from one place to another: imagine standing in an empty Louvre, just inches from the Mona Lisa and being able to see the texture of every brushstroke in exquisite detail – while still in your bedroom. The difference between virtual tourism in the form of a guided video tour, for example, and an immersive virtual reality experience is the interactivity. And for your visitors to enjoy your product in their homes, they’ll probably need VR goggles. Imagine the highest-quality video game or film graphics you’ve ever seen, and then imagine that in 4D! If you’re going to offer this kind of virtual tourism to your visitors, you’ll need to spend a lot of effort on design and technology. The more complex path to virtual tourism involves data science – mathematical modelling and location mapping to create a virtual travel experience that could have been ripped straight from a sci-fi novel. The only real barriers to “entry” to your virtual tourism offering? Stable internet access, your venue’s online reach, and how well you’re able to capture your venue on a screen. Seeing as your potential customers are already predisposed to ideas like live-streaming and geotagging on social media, this is the easiest way to offer virtual tourism. Think virtual city tours and online exhibitions. ![]() The simple way? Recorded site visits by tour companies or guides. There’s a simple way and a complex way to get into the nuance of virtual tourism. The Coronavirus pandemic has hit the tourism industry hard, but virtual tourism has provided an avenue for museums and attractions to sustain the connection with the public by meeting them exactly where they are: online. Virtual tourism involves using technology to continue to offer access – albeit remotely – to entertainment, art, culture and travel. And while the trend of offering experiences virtually may have been born of necessity, it’s now thriving thanks to its success. In the meantime, members of the tourism industry need to work with what they’ve got: virtual tourism. ![]() Cities will reawaken, flights will begin to hurtle around the world once more, and the tourism industry will pick again. Right now, it might be hard to imagine a world after the pandemic, but what we do know is: this, too, shall pass. In addition, the scats that were found were analyzed and did not contain roundworm eggs.Īdditional work in year 2000 will concentrate on identifying the northern and southern limit of woodrat occurrence on the Palisades in an attempt to document the extent of the population expansion. The occurrence of scats has been minimal indicating a relatively small raccoon population. In addition to monitoring the population of woodrats we have been sampling their habitat for the presence of raccoon scats for the past 2 years. A previous study of the raccoons at the Palisades revealed infection rates among raccoons to be relatively low compared to other areas where woodrats have disappeared. The decline has been attributed, at least in part, to lethal infections of the parasite, raccoon roundworm. ![]() Our Palisades population appears to be doing well despite the documented decline of populations throughout the northeastern portion of their range. One animal was captured almost 2 miles south of the normal population centers suggesting the population may have expanded in recent years. The results of the trapping indicate the population at the Palisades appears to be not only stable, but expanding. Normally, between 10 and 17 woodrats are caught in a 2 night trapping session. Twenty-four woodrats were captured in 2 nights of trapping. Live trapping in October of 1999 yielded the most individual woodrats ever captured at the site during a 2 night trapping session. The live trap sampling is done in the fall when the population is at its highest level in the annual cycle. This population has been sampled periodically through live trapping the animals which are measured, marked and released. The ENSP continued to monitor the state's last remaining eastern woodrat population at the Palisades Interstate Park in Bergen County. Today, this population defines the northern and eastern limit of the eastern woodrat's range in North America. Extensive field work by the Endangered and Nongame Species Program in the late 80's and early 90's confirmed the disappearance of the woodrat from all its historic ranges in New Jersey except for one location, the Palisades in Bergen County.
